Dear Inkstick Readers,
This is Patrick Strickland, the managing editor of Inkstick Media, and I’m reaching out to let you know that between now and the end of 2025, any and all donations you make to our nonprofit newsroom will count double thanks to the annual NewsMatch fundraising campaign. We’re as excited as we are grateful for NewsMatch’s support — and we’re hoping you, our readers, will donate to help support our journalism.
To break it down, if you donate $10, NewsMatch will match your donation — and Inkstick will receive $20. Make it $500, and Inkstick will receive $1,000. Last year, Inkstick was fortunate enough to raise $6,000 during our NewsMatch campaign.
This year, we hope you will help us raise even more — our goal is to reach $15,000, which would go directly toward improving Inkstick's compensation for our freelance contributors and writers, and expanding our newsroom.
What is Inkstick?
Founded in 2017 by Laicie Heeley, Inkstick Media is a US-based nonprofit newsroom dedicated to shining a light on the human consequences of endless war, the mistruths behind the military industrial complex, and human rights issues from the United States to the Gaza Strip. Unlike many trade publications, Inkstick does not accept donations from the defense industry.
Inkstick has collaborated with newsrooms and papers around the world, and our reportage and analysis have been translated into several languages and republished by newspapers in countries like Spain, Greece, Switzerland, and Germany. At the same time, we regularly collaborate with local news outlets and newspapers across the United States. Inkstick also partners with PRX the World to produce the Things That Go Boom podcast, which recently won awards and recognition across a slate of categories in the 2025 Signal Awards.
In short, Inkstick is a group of editors and reporters who insist on covering the tough topics many outlets shirk away from — no matter the consequences — and keeping the everyday people impacted by conflict, authoritarianism, and the defense industry at the center of their own stories.
How Will Your Support Help Inkstick?
Inkstick Media depends on donations and fundraising campaigns like NewsMatch to keep doing its work. Your donations will help us continue producing the kind of reporting we are committed to doing.
Support like this will directly help us fund reporting and research, better compensate our freelance contributors, and cover the costs of the daily operations that keep our online magazine publishing out stories you won’t find elsewhere.
Yeah, But Why Should You Donate?
Whether it’s at the hands of deepening authoritarianism or deadly conflict, newsrooms around the world are under attack. Politicians routinely speak of targeting nonprofit organizations, including those that support news outlets and nonprofit newsrooms themselves, and journalists around the world are facing greater risks to get you the news.
In the face of shrinking press freedoms and attacks on free speech, Inkstick has doubled down on its mandate: publishing journalists from around the world whose reporting refuses to pick a sensational headline over the real people who bear the brunt of wars, conflicts, militarized borders, domestic military deployments, and political crackdowns.
Inkstick relies on donations, and fundraisers like this one, to exist. We appreciate your patience with extra emails during these times. If you’d rather not hear so much from us, you can opt out of our end-of-year campaign by clicking here [ [link removed] ] and adjusting your Substack preferences.
