As a former candidate myself, I can tell you that running for office is so impossibly hard, it's hard to describe. It’s marathon-long days and sleepless nights, putting yourself and your family on the line to stand up for your community’s values. It’s facing relentless criticism and frightening attacks, both threatened and real. It's the constant pressure of knowing that millions are counting on you. It's the fear that if you don’t succeed, those millions could end up less safe, with fewer options, facing worse outcomes than they should have to.

John McAuliff knows all of this — and he’s doing it anyway. By any measure, McAulliff's opponent, Geary Higgins, is one of the most beatable bigots in the country.
