For parents and caregivers of autistic children, caregiving is like two jobs. One is focused on meeting daily needs. The other on advocating, teaching, and believing in your loved one’s potential. In this newsletter, we provide support for you on both fronts.
But we also recognize your role requires every ounce of energy you have. So first, we want to remind you to take care of yourself, too. Because only when you do, can you care for the ones who mean the most. So please be sure to check out our simple self-care tips ( [link removed] ) to help you recharge and be the best for both you and your loved one.

Ask your member of Congress to support the Autism Family Caregivers Act
Caregivers skills training (CST) programs provide proven tools for caregivers of children with autism and other developmental disabilities to use at home to improve communication, social and daily living skills. But access remains limited. The Autism Family Caregivers Act, currently before Congress, would help fix that. Ask your member of Congress to support this bipartisan bill to expand access to CST programs. Take action here. ( [link removed] )

Teach your child about citizenship and the power of their voice at the polls
Autistic people can and do vote. Yet less than half of those who are eligible do. There’s a lot at stake – and as a voting block they can determine local, state and national elections. Caregivers can play a vital role in getting them out to vote. Our Autism Votes Teaching Story ( [link removed] ) can help with that. It includes easy-to-access information about registering to vote, how to vote, and learning about what’s on their current ballot.

The recent NASEM report marks an important milestone, and we urge the Defense Health Agency to adopt the report’s recommendations on how to improve high-quality, evidence-based autism care for all military families. Read about our efforts and the report on TRICARE. ( [link removed] )
