At 4:15 a.m. on June 5, 1944, GENERAL DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER faced the
most difficult decision of his life: whether to send 156,000 ALLIED
TROOPS into a FULL-SCALE INVASION of Nazi-occupied France.
The weather was treacherous and the risk enormous - and the
responsibility rested solely on Eisenhower’s shoulders.
After giving the go-ahead, Eisenhower quietly wrote a note taking full
responsibility in case the mission failed:
_“IF ANY BLAME OR FAULT ATTACHES TO THE ATTEMPT, IT IS MINE
ALONE.”_
He also wrote that, in the event of success, he would give full credit
to the soldiers on the ground.
That handwritten message, never released, never needed, shows what
real leadership looks like. Eisenhower wasn’t simply commanding an
army. He was embodying the kind of integrity and humility we rarely
see today.
With the full knowledge that success or failure rested in his hands,
Eisenhower trusted his judgement and made the decision to proceed.
