When Charlie first spoke of writing a book on the Sabbath, I felt a=C2=A0qu=
iet joy rise within me. Out of all the topics the world might expect from h=
im; politics, culture, or the crises of our day, this was not the obvious c=
hoice. And yet, it was the right one. I knew he had been entrusted with a m=
essage for weary souls. For beneath the constant hum of urgency and the end=
less clamor of life, he discerned what so many overlook: the absence of tru=
e rest. Not the shallow relief of sleeping late or silencing a phone, but t=
he holy rest that comes only when one surrenders the rush, sits before the=
=C2=A0Lord, and remembers that He is God.
=C2=A0
Charlie=E2=80=99s days were full to the brim. He bore a weight of responsib=
ility that few could comprehend. Charlie hosted three hours of live radio e=
ach day, traveled more than three hundred days a year, visited college and =
high school campuses every week, and passionately shared the Gospel at chur=
ches around the country. Layered on top of this was the sacred calling of b=
eing a husband and a father,=C2=A0roles he never treated lightly. By all ap=
pearances, there should have=C2=A0been no margin left. And yet, there was. =
Charlie understood that human strength alone could never sustain such a lif=
e. He anchored himself in the Word of God. He embraced the Sabbath not as a=
n antiquated ritual, but as a bold confession of faith and a declaration th=
at the world is upheld by God=E2=80=99s hand, not man=E2=80=99s striving.
=C2=A0
My husband=E2=80=99s conviction was not born in a moment, nor did it appear=
without root. From the earliest days of our marriage, I watched him earnes=
tly pursue what it meant to walk in obedience to God. He was well acquainte=
d with the lure of busyness and the subtle tyranny of distraction, as we al=
l are, and he understood the quiet devastation they bring to families, to c=
ommunities, and even to a nation. Honoring the Sabbath became his defiance =
against=C2=A0that lie. It was his declaration that a man=E2=80=99s value is=
not measured by
his output and productivity level, but by his surrender. In keeping=C2=A0th=
e Sabbath, Charlie was saying with his life: =E2=80=9CGod, You are=C2=A0eno=
ugh, and because You are enough, I need not carry the weight of a world tha=
t was never mine to hold.=E2=80=9D
