Late Friday evening, Donald Trump commuted the sentence of longtime Republican Party operative Roger Stone.

Stone was convicted of making false statements, obstruction of a congressional inquiry, and witness tampering.

Stone’s actions amounted to a crime against democracy.

Trump understood it as exactly that: an effort to shield him from democratic accountability.

That’s why Trump commuted Stone’s sentence.

And it’s why that commutation is itself an offense against democracy and the rule of law.

This is not what America should be.

And we desperately need people within the Trump administration to take a stand.

Join Public Citizen in calling on employees at the Department of Justice to resign in protest of the all-out assault on the rule of law being carried out by President Trump and Attorney General William Barr.

Add your name.

For some in the department, resigning may not be practical, given the stage of their career. We get that. But everyone at the agency should at least consider whether they can separate themselves from a president and attorney general who daily mock the constitutional values they have sworn to uphold.

For justice,

- Robert Weissman, President of Public Citizen
