Friend,
Our nation was founded on the belief that the media should work in freedom, not in fear. So I'm committed to shielding Colorado's press from undue political influence – whether it's overreach from the FCC or from profit-hungry media companies trying to stay in Trump's good graces.
That’s why I am demanding FCC Chairman Brendan Carr put the best interests of Colorado's communities over corporate profit by BLOCKING the $6.2 billion merger between Nexstar Media and TEGNA.
If you already know what's at stake if this merger goes through, and you agree that the FCC must enforce anti-monopoly laws to protect the integrity of the news in our state, then will you please add your name to be one of the 10,000 grassroots signatures I need on my petition right away?
Otherwise, allow me to explain:
For Colorado, the merger may consolidate our local news stations, giving Nexstar – the corporation that pulled Jimmy Kimmel Live! from its affiliate stations last month in response to Carr's threats – near-total control over programming and the narratives on our airwaves. It jeopardizes free, fair, and accurate journalism across Colorado, risking our media becoming even more nationalized, more politicized, and less locally based.
But across the country, the stakes are even higher. This merger would grant Nexstar ownership of 265 stations in 44 states, increasing its reach to 80% of U.S. households – in direct violation of federal law, which caps it at 39%.
In short, it could have devastating consequences for free speech, freedom of the press, and the free flow of information nationwide.
Jimmy Kimmel Live! only returned to the airwaves after widespread backlash from people like you against Brendan Carr’s dangerous attack on the First Amendment. So before 11:59 p.m. tonight, I need you and 9,999 more supporters to raise your voices with me one more time.
This monopolistic merger jeopardizes the very cornerstone of our democracy. Help me defend it now: Will you add your name as a grassroots co-signer on this petition to the FCC?
Thank you for taking action with me – in defense of our home state and our democracy.
Michael
