John, Right now, the fair maps movement is in court, fighting the gerrymandered map that Texas Republicans forced through at the behest of Donald Trump. And for good reason. A new analysis finds that their map is a “statistical outlier” and that the architects of this map intentionally drew it along racial lines. This shameful strategy — known as “cracking and packing” — is designed to intentionally push voters of color into one district to dilute their votes and minimize their voting power. It’s a tactic that’s been used to deprive voters of color of their voice since the Jim Crow era. While craven politicians draw lines to protect their power, something else is happening: Across the country, voters are drawing their own lines in the sand to fight for transparency and fairness in our democracy.
