Friend,
Today, 360,000 people across Connecticut could lose access to food assistance due to President Trump’s shutdown. Let’s be clear about what is happening – the President is starving American families in order to score political points. It's among the most callous policy choices I’ve seen during my time in Washington, and I’m devastated for the parents across the country who may have to put hungry kids to bed tonight due to the loss of SNAP.
Thankfully, two federal judges have ruled that the Trump Administration must continue funding SNAP during this shutdown. But given the President's disdain for the judicial branch and apparent desire to manufacture a hunger crisis, my team and I are deeply concerned and will be monitoring the situation.
You can be sure that I will continue to try to end this government shutdown, inviting my more reasonable Republican colleagues to break from the White House and support a compromise that re-opens the government without skyrocketing the cost of healthcare. Democrats are ready to make a deal, but the Republican Party refuses to do its job and come to the table.
The State of Connecticut has stepped up by providing $3 million in emergency funding for the Connecticut Foodshare, and that influx of funding will help keep the shelves stocked at local food banks for a little while. If you or someone you know needs help accessing nutritional assistance, visit connect.ct.gov [[link removed]] or call 860-856-4357. You can also call 2-1-1 to find a local food pantry, or text FOODSHARE to 85511 and locate a mobile pantry in your area.
If you are not impacted by the loss of SNAP benefits, consider donating food or financial resources to a food pantry in our area. Though the President should never have put us in this situation, I have faith that our community will look out for each other during this time of need.
President Reagan used to talk about mornings in America – that feeling of waking up proud and optimistic, both for the future of the nation and the day that lies ahead of you. The Republican Party has fallen quite a way since then. Families in President Trump’s America are waking up hungrier than they were yesterday and less certain of how they’ll afford their next meal. We can and must do better.
Jim
