This is a somber day, John.

Because Washington Republicans have failed to do their jobs, nearly 1 million Arizonans who depend on SNAP benefits to put food on the table could be cut off from this vital program.

It is unconscionable that the Trump administration is choosing to take food off the tables of Arizona families and playing politics with people's livelihoods. They could end this today if they wanted to. They are choosing not to.

John, one reason we’re in this mess is because too many politicians in Washington don't know what it's like to struggle. I do.

Growing up in Tempe, my family sometimes depended on programs like food stamps and support from our church community to make ends meet. Even after I was elected to public office, I drove for Uber to pay the bills to help pay for my kids’ Christmas presents.

The recklessness out of Washington is personal to me, John. It doesn't need to be this way.

It's why I'm calling on the Trump administration and Republicans in Washington to end this crisis and do their jobs.

Until then, I am doing everything I can to support families across Arizona, starting with allocating $1.5 million to food banks across the state to support Arizonans who have nowhere else to turn in this crisis.
