Hi John,
Today we’re entering the second month of the government shutdown—and if it
lasts until November 5, it would become the longest shutdown in history.
We’ve also reached an unprecedented new low.
For the first time in the history of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance
Program (SNAP), funding is at risk of running out, which would leave tens
of millions unable to feed their families.
Although a federal court on Friday ordered the Trump administration to
continue paying SNAP benefits, it’s not clear when those payments will
actually reach the people who need them—if the administration complies
with the order. They’ve previously suggested that it could take weeks to
disburse benefits, according to the New York Times.
Meanwhile, federal workers continue to miss paychecks, military service
members are at risk of the same if nothing changes in the next two weeks,
and health insurance premiums are set to skyrocket starting today as
Republicans refuse to extend subsidies under the Affordable Care Act.
And this comes on the heels of Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill”, which already
cut SNAP funding by about 20% over the next decade, despite warnings from
the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office that about 4 million children,
seniors, veterans, and people with disabilities will have their food
assistance terminated or dramatically reduced as a result.
So today, while we continue our work to flip the House to Democrats next
year to stop this kind of cruelty at its source, we’re also asking you to
support your local food bank—to make certain that no matter what happens
with SNAP funding, those most affected by the shutdown won’t have to go
hungry.
We know this is a little different from what we usually ask. But moments
like this call on us to show up not just as volunteers or donors, but as
neighbors and community members.

As we navigate this challenging time, the potential loss of critical food
assistance programs is one more reminder why our work to flip the House to
Democrats is so important. While Republicans are content to let Americans
go hungry in order to achieve their goal of raising health care costs for
millions, we know that the Democratic majorities we’re working to elect
will always work to make sure families’ basic needs are met.
So thank you,
John, for being a part of this
community—one that steps up when it matters most. We’re grateful for
everything you’re doing in this moment, and we’ll be in touch soon with
more updates on how we fight back together.
