Five days ago, the USDA announced that the Supplemental Nutrition
Assistance Program (SNAP) will not be funded on November 1st due to the
federal shutdown.
Yesterday, two federal judges ordered the Trump administration to fund the
program, but both acknowledged there is no timeline as to when the funding
might be restored.
1 in 8 Americans — 42 million senior citizens, disabled people, low-income
families with kids, and more — lost their food assistance today, just
weeks before Thanksgiving.

This is the first time in United States history that the USDA has stopped
food assistance during a government shutdown.
The Trump administration falsely claims that billions of dollars in SNAP
assistance is given to undocumented immigrants.
The USDA’s own data from 2023 reflects that 89.4% of SNAP recipients were
U.S.- born citizens. The remaining 11% includes 6.2% naturalized citizens,
1.1% refugees, and 3.3% other noncitizens, including lawful permanent
residents and other eligible noncitizens.^1
