I know it’s almost the holiday season, which can bring up complicated emotions, especially with so much happening in our country and around the world.
As Thanksgiving nears, millions of turkeys will be killed. They suffer terribly and are denied basic humane protection—but I’m also sharing a way that you can help.
Over 99% of U.S. turkeys are kept on factory farms—and birds account for about 95% of land animals killed for food nationwide. Yet, birds are excluded from the Humane Methods of Slaughter Act (HMSA), which governs the treatment of farm animals during slaughter.
Due to their breeding for debilitating rapid growth and the conditions on factory farms, some turkeys won’t survive long enough to reach the slaughterhouse. The final moments of those who do—including 46 million turkeys killed for Thanksgiving—are left up to profit-driven agribusiness.
Some birds are fully conscious when slaughtered or dunked into a tank of scalding water. Nobody deserves this horrific suffering.
That’s why Farm Sanctuary and many concerned citizens continue to encourage the protection of birds under the HMSA. We won’t give up the fight.
Also, since 1986, Farm Sanctuary’s Adopt a Turkey Project has inspired kindhearted people like you to embrace a compassionate holiday by sponsoring a turkey instead of eating one.
Your one-time adoption gift will support the daily care of your chosen turkey and Farm Sanctuary’s hundreds of other rescued residents, while benefiting our powerful advocacy to defend billions of farm animals against cruelty. And, we’ll send you an adoption certificate perfect for sharing on social media or displaying on your holiday table to encourage compassion.
Please act now and join us in embracing a kinder Thanksgiving. Thank you for caring and for your support.
With gratitude,
