Hi John,
Fossil fuel companies have so far made a shocking $80 billion through corporate court cases – often because they allege that government climate action will harm their profits. 2025 has been a record-breaking year for oil, gas and mining companies suing countries for billions more of taxpayers’ money.
Now the UK is in the firing line – it is being sued for halting the Cumbria coal mine. Our government can no longer deny how much corporate courts threaten its own climate action. Thank you to everyone who has donated to strengthen our campaign in light of the Cumbria case – we’ve had a great response. I'm writing today because we’re now taking this work further.
The surge in claims by fossil fuel firms comes at humanity’s ‘now or never’ moment for keeping global heating below the Paris Agreement target of 1.5C. This is why we’ve put corporate courts – also known as Investor-State Dispute Settlement (ISDS) – on the agenda of the COP30 UN climate talks.
We’ve secured two official events, in the main arena and on the fringe, which will highlight for decisionmakers how this dangerous system blocks the climate action the summit seeks to push forward.
This is a major platform on which to boost the global movement against corporate courts, bring together governments which are taking a stand, and increase the pressure on the UK to follow suit. But to make the most of this moment, and keep building power after the talks, we need your support.
Can you donate £5 today to ensure our government feels the heat at COP30 and beyond?

** UK big business has always used corporate courts – now they’re hitting home
------------------------------------------------------------

UK companies have long benefitted from this toxic trade rule which the UK government upholds in its trade and investment agreements. Corporate courts overturn or punish the wins communities around the world have had in protecting their rights and land from corporate abuses.
UK companies have already pocketed £19 billion in fossil fuel-related cases, including from countries particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change like Bangladesh, Bolivia and Chad. We cannot allow big business to keep seizing piles of public funds that could otherwise be used by governments to tackle climate change.
With foreign investors now suing the UK over a climate ruling, we can make a strong argument at home while showing how the UK is falling behind on the international stage. Your support will help strengthen the fight against corporate courts at COP30 and beyond. Can you back the campaign with a donation today?

** What your donation will do
------------------------------------------------------------
With your gift, we can build a powerful presence at the COP30 climate talks, bringing governments together to grow their confidence to stand against corporate courts and convince others to join them. You’ll also be helping to strengthen our ties with allies around the world, and help coordinate our work as a global movement against ISDS after the summit.
With your backing we’ll be able to get more of the UK public on side by exposing details of the Cumbria coal mine case in media investigations. We’ll also build the network of MPs putting pressure on ministers to scrap ISDS through lobbying, events and campaign actions.
Rather than being stifled by the fossil fuel industry we need our governments to stand together and protect their sovereignty. Removing these anti-democratic trade rules is one of the most powerful actions governments can take for the climate. I know that together we can convince the UK to drop corporate courts for good.
Thank you for all you do for our campaigns.

Best wishes,

Jonathan Stevenson,
Head of campaigns at Global Justice Now
PS. Corporate courts are blocking climate action worldwide. Can you donate today ([link removed]) to strengthen the global movement we need and help push our government to drop these toxic trade rules?
