Months ago, DC residents and decision-makers were shocked by a $1,100,000,000 deficit in our local budget caused by Congress.

Now, DC's funds are under attack again. Councilmembers must act to protect $658 million in local money.

DC’s tax code conforms to parts of the federal tax code, so several of the wasteful and poorly targeted tax cuts in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA) will be replicated in our local tax code unless lawmakers take action.

Our communities in DC are suffering now more than ever. This money could be used for housing, health care, and other support for residents.

Our partners at DC Fiscal Policy Institute are sounding the alarm on this imminent danger. Take action with them by sending an email to Council now. Help ensure that federal tax cuts do not also drain our local budget.

The failure to unlink from federal tax changes would:

• Cost DC $658 million in lost revenue needed for schools, affordable housing, and care programs over the next several years.
• Primarily benefit households earning over $500,000 while draining resources from programs that support residents in need.
• Allow Congress to call the shots in our local tax code in ways that don’t reflect our values and worsen persistent racial disparities. 

DC lawmakers must reclaim control of our local tax code before it’s too late.
