John,
Referring to Britain’s occupation of the American colonies, Thomas Paine wrote in Common Sense that "there is something absurd in supposing a continent to be perpetually governed by an island."
Today, the “island” is MAGA: a fringe cult with unpopular and extreme ideas; and the “continent” is the vast majority of the American people, including most voters, who do not subscribe to MAGA’s agenda.
For example: Over 60% of Americans believe abortion should be legal in most or all cases. MAGA wants total abortion bans and to monitor women’s fertility and pregnancy cycles.
And according to Pew Research, nearly 58% of Americans think taxes should be raised on the wealthy, not lowered. Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill” slashed top tax rates for the rich, giving households earning $1 million or more annually a tax break of nearly $100,000 per year.
In Pennsylvania, the 5-2 liberal majority on the state Supreme Court has been a crucial backstop against MAGA’s gross, repressive agenda.
But now, that majority is at stake as three Democratic justices are up for retention (or defeat) in the upcoming November 4 election: Justice Christine Donohue, Justice Kevin Dougherty, and Justice David Wecht.
