Recently, a top attorney blew the whistle on shocking abuses of power inside the Trump-era Department of Justice.
Erez Reuveni, a former attorney in the DOJ, revealed that government lawyers lied in court, defied judges’ orders, and tried to shred the rule of law — all to serve Trump’s personal political agenda.
Under Trump, the DOJ has weaponized the law itself. They invoked the Alien Enemies Act, a 1798 wartime law, to deport over 100 Venezuelans labeled “terrorists” without due process. DOJ leadership even told their subordinates to ignore court orders if judges tried to stop them.
In the nightmare case of Kilmar Abrego Garcia — kidnapped and illegally expelled to a brutal detention center in El Salvador, denied his rights to due process — Reuveni’s boss ordered him to argue Abrego Garcia was a terrorist, even though there was no evidence. When Reuveni refused, he was fired.
Reuveni’s story is a striking reminder that our rights, our courts, and our Constitution are only as strong as the people who stand up to protect and defend them.
This is what happens when the Justice Department becomes a political weapon, instead of serving as a guardian of the law. They have a duty to uphold the Constitution and protect civil rights — but instead, they do Trump’s political bidding, flout federal court orders, and commit outright abuses of power.
