I hope tonight brings you and your family a chance to enjoy your community, make some memories, and maybe grab a few pieces of candy. Growing up in Michigan, Halloween was always fun – we bundled up, carved pumpkins, and went trick-or-treating. I loved it then, and I still do. It’s one of those rare days that brings people in the neighborhood together just for the fun of it. But while tonight is full of costumes and candy, I want to talk to you about something much scarier than ghosts or ghouls: the reality facing millions of American families when they wake up tomorrow morning. This is truly frightening: Tomorrow, the safety net is gone.On November 1, several major impacts of the ongoing government shutdown and MAGA Republican obstruction will hit at once: 🛑 SNAP benefits will be cut off for 42 million Americans, including millions of seniors and children. In Michigan alone, over 1.4 million people rely on SNAP. Many of these folks are working – doing everything they can and still struggling to make ends meet. 💊 Health care costs are about to spike for working families – not by a few bucks, but in some cases by hundreds or even thousands of dollars a year. Why? Because Republicans are refusing to extend the enhanced subsidies that made ACA plans more affordable. They’ve also walked away from Medicaid expansion in multiple states, blocking care for millions of people who need it most. 🕐 We’ll also mark one full month of Trump’s government shutdown. Federal workers and contractors are going without pay. Services are delayed or disrupted. And people are scared – scared about missing rent, missing meals, and missing lifesaving care for their kids. This is real. Trump and his MAGA allies need to know this isn’t a political game. This isn’t an abstract budget debate. There are good people who don’t know if they’ll be able to feed their children next week. People who are skipping insulin doses or canceling doctor’s appointments because they’re afraid of the bill. And the scariest part? This could continue for another three years – or more. Because Donald Trump and his allies are telling us exactly what they plan to do: seize power, ignore the Constitution, and continue this far-right chaos unchecked through 2028 and beyond. If we don’t stop them – this shutdown, these benefit cuts, this cruelty – this will become the new normal. We cannot let that happen. That’s why I’m running for Senate. Because Michiganders deserve more than fear and uncertainty. They deserve leaders who will fight for working families – not just for their wealthy pals. I’m in this race because I know what’s at stake. I remember what it felt like during 2009 – the fear Michiganders had of losing everything. I helped lead the auto rescue effort, and we helped save 200,000 Michigan jobs by showing up, listening, and taking urgent action. We need that same urgency now. Families across our state – and across the country – are doing everything they can. They’re working long hours, stretching every dollar, caring for kids and older adults, and still falling behind. They don’t need gimmicks. They don’t need grandstanding. They don’t need an expensive new ballroom at the White House. They need a government that works for them. And leaders who show up. So tonight, as the jack-o’-lanterns glow on doorsteps across Michigan, I’m thinking about the real-life fear so many of our neighbors are facing. I see you. And I’m more committed than ever to fighting for you. I’ll be sharing more in the coming weeks about our grassroots movement, our campaign, and my plans to keep standing up for working families. But for now, I just want to say thank you for being here. Thank you for staying informed, staying hopeful, and standing up for what’s right. With grit and gratitude, Paid for by Haley Stevens for Michigan. |
