The federal government has been shut down for a month, and it seems our Congressman, Gabe Evans, has no problem following Republican leadership's orders and enjoying his month-long paid vacation.
On the campaign trail, I’ve been hearing from voters who are angry and scared about what is going on in Washington. Air traffic controllers, service members, national park workers, and other federal workers are struggling to make rent, pay their bills, and support their families without their paychecks. And yet, they’re still expected to perform essential work for our country.
Soon, people will be receiving notices in the mail about their double- and triple-digit increases in healthcare premium costs—thanks to Republican cuts to healthcare subsidies to pay for tax giveaways to the ultra-wealthy.
Funding for SNAP benefits, which Republicans have already slashed, is unlikely to arrive in November, straining food banks and leaving some Colorado families uncertain about when they’ll be able to put food on the table again.
Halloween only comes once a year, but with this Republican-controlled Congress, the horror show for working families won’t end until Colorado’s Eighth District ends it—and that’s precisely why I’m in this race.
CO-08 deserves a leader who goes on the offensive for their needs and interests, rather than obeying the commands of the President or party leadership. Whether as a teacher, union leader, state legislator, or state treasurer, I’ve always put the needs of our working families and their children first.
It’s time we have a Congressman who will do the same.
