John -
I wanted to share some updates with you from our work over the past few
months.
Local governments are critical to combating Donald Trump’s MAGA far-right
agenda, and 350 Action’s “Our Cities, Our Roots” campaign has been focused
on mayoral races happening in cities across the country.
We hosted forums with mayoral candidates in two key cities – Detroit and
New Orleans – ahead of their respective primaries, giving community
members the opportunity to hear from their candidates about where they
stand on climate justice.
Why Detroit and New Orleans? Both cities have seen historically low voter
turnout in municipal elections. Both are made up of majority Black, brown,
and Indigenous communities of color. And both are in regions that suffer
frequent climate disasters and inequitably high levels of climate and
environmental pollution.
In Detroit, we convened with local partners Detroit People’s Platform,
Justice for Beniteau, Michigan Environmental Justice Coalition,
Soulardarity and Urban Lorax to build an intersectional climate justice
platform touching on local climate issues intersected with housing,
transportation and household affordability with utilities. The forum was
moderated by Piper Carter.

In New Orleans, shortly after the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina,
we convened with local partners Alliance for Affordable Energy, Friends of
the Earth Action, Housing NOLA, and The Water Collaborative where our
platform uplifted issues such as regulation of fossil fuel imports, the
housing insurance crisis, and lead testing of water. That forum was
moderated by Louisiana Public Service Commissioner Davante Lewis.

Hundreds of local community members attended these forums, proving once
again that voters really do care about climate – they just need a pathway
to engage with local politics.
Thank you for standing with us,
Candice for 350 Action
