Oldham’s Christmas Lights switch-on is back

Oldham’s annual Christmas Light Switch-On is just around the corner and this year’s celebration promises to be one to remember.

Join us in the town centre on Saturday 15 November throughout the day as we officially kick off the festive season with a fun-filled day packed with plenty of family entertainment.

Bluey and Bingo will be this year’s specials guests and Father Christmas will be stopping by to spread some cheer during the light switch on show from 5.30pm.

And as always, the evening will finish with Oldham’s iconic firework finale over Parliament Square. The annual spectacular display is always a treat and brings the celebrations to a sparkling close.

Don’t miss it, it’s the perfect way to start the countdown to Christmas in Oldham.

A warm start for new beginnings in Oldham

Six expectant mums received newborn clothing bundles thanks to the Winter Wardrobe campaign

The campaign visited Stanley Road Family Hub, Chadderton, on Tuesday morning.

Run by the charity Our Community Wardrobe Oldham with Oldham Family Hubs, it helps families in need of a helping hand prepare for the colder months with cosy pre-loved good quality clothing and essential items.

Cynthia Ikedum, due in December, was given cosy babygrows, a baby bath and a cot.

“This is a very big help — a great example of the community coming together,” she said.

Razmilla Samsudeen, also due in December, will be provided with a double buggy and a booster seat. “The appeal helped with my first born last year,” she said.

To donate, email [email protected] or call 07759 139 930.

Spook-tacular fun at the Family Hubs

What a fang-tastic time families had at the Parent Voices Halloween Party at Spring Meadows Family Hub.

Huge thanks to everyone who joined in the spooky games, pumpkin painting, creepy crafts, face painting and costume competition hosted by Positive Steps and our Family Hubs. The costumes were amazing.

Chloe Lawson, who attended with her friend Melissa Collier and their sons Oscar and Oliver, shared: “I love it here and he loves coming. He’s learning to share with children his own age and it’s preparing him for nursery.”

Chloe joins us every Tuesday at Stay and Play and Baby Play at Spring Meadows Family Hub with Oscar and his baby brother Theodore — and we’re so glad they’re part of our Family Hub community.

We can’t wait for the next one at Beever Family Hub at 2.30—4.30pm today (Friday 31 October) on Moorby Street, OL1 3QU.

[Runners at the start of the Halloween Half]

Hundreds take on the Halloween half

More than 450 runners laced up their trainers to take on the Oldham Community Leisure Oldham Halloween Half Marathon on Sunday, one of the toughest half marathons in the country.

Starting in Oldham town centre, runners faced challenging hills and fantastic views of the borough along the 13.1-mile course.

The event was made possible thanks to the incredible volunteers, marshals, organisers and supporters who gave their time to ensure everything ran smoothly on the day.

Congratulations to everyone who took part – you should wear your medals with pride!

Cup of tea and a tissue  —  sometimes that's all it takes to show you care

In our latest Oldham Cast episode, we spoke to Rose Ssali and Karen Croft from SAWN (Support and Action for Women’s Network) about the powerful work they do to help women rebuild their lives.

When someone reaches out to SAWN for help, they’re offered a simple care pack containing a tissue for their tears and a teabag to remind them that even in the hardest moments, there is warmth, comfort and care waiting for them.

These are the real heroes of Oldham, changing lives one cup of tea at a time.
