I might be off my feet but I'm not off the job ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌

G’day John,

As you know from my newsletter last week – I am stranded on the couch waiting for news about my spinal surgery. My parliamentary team is in Canberra – and I am flicking between the Senate and The Kardashians. Just kidding – it’s only been the Senate – where there has been a level of drama that Kim and Courtney would love!

The government has been sitting on a report, commissioned by them, to look at the ‘jobs for mates’ culture – they’ve had this report for two years! They ordered it, Australians paid for it, and now they're hiding it.

Australians deserve to know how public appointments are made, not just watch mates pat each other on the back for cushy jobs.

On Wednesday, Senator David Pocock convinced the Coalition, the Greens, and all crossbench senators to support a motion that takes one daily government-friendly question (called a Dorothy Dixer) and gives it to non-government senators instead.

To say the government is furious is an understatement!

That’s why I am running a campaign against the Government’s proposed changes to our freedom of information laws. Despite promising they would be transparent, they have blocked more requests for documents than the Morrison Government!

Even though I am in not in the house, I had a win with my motion to establish an inquiry to investigate the Airport security fees worn by rural and regional airports.

Basically, a passenger going through security at Sydney or Melbourne is charged around 75 cents - for a passenger going through a regional airport, that charge could be 45 dollars. Like so many things - it's cheaper in the city and more expensive in rural and regional areas like Tasmania. We need to get a handle on these fees so our smaller airports are sustainable and that travel is cheaper for Tasmanians.

Finally, it is looking like the government is backing off on the proposed changes to the Defence Honours and Awards legislation. Sky News reported on Tuesday that the government is rethinking the 20-year limit – why they have to limit it at all is beyond me! I have heard from Veterans and veteran centred organisations, they all think it’s a bad idea. – The only supportive submission to the Inquiry was from Defence – who would have guessed?! Here is the Sky story

Hope you are all well – well at least better than am at the moment. Thanks for sticking with me through this, I might be off my feet but I'm not off the job!

   Cheers!

    Jacqui
