Earlier this month, under cover of a Republican government shutdown, the Trump administration defied Congress, blatantly violated the law, and targeted California with nearly $8 billion in punitive grant cancellations. The 79 previously approved grants ranged from clean energy projects, to renewable energy manufacturing, to critical infrastructure like a children’s hospital in Madera.

Let’s be clear: this is about political revenge, not fiscal responsibility. And we’re not going to stand for it.

That’s why I just joined 27 of my California colleagues in calling out Trump’s egregious abuse of power and demanding accountability.

Every single one of the states targeted by Trump’s grant cancellations voted against him in the last election, with California being by far the biggest. And every one of those cancelled projects would have made our communities safer, our power grid stronger, and our energy costs lower.

Trump is trying to stick it to California families in so many ways – from his healthcare crisis, to chaotic trade wars, to this.

Cancelling these projects will cost thousands of jobs across the energy, construction, and manufacturing sectors. It will make electricity more expensive for families already struggling to keep up. And it will weaken our competitiveness just as the rest of the world is racing ahead on clean energy innovation.

That’s why I’m demanding accountability. Along with Speaker Emerita Pelosi, Senators Padilla and Schiff, and dozens of California lawmakers, I’ve called on the Department of Energy’s Inspector General to investigate these unlawful terminations and restore the funds Congress legally appropriated.

California taxpayers send hundreds of billions of dollars to the federal government every year – and we deserve better than to be punished for refusing to bow to Trump’s extremist agenda.

This is about fairness, accountability, and the rule of law. Trump and his MAGA allies cannot be allowed to sabotage clean energy just to score political points.

Let’s show that when Trump attacks California, we fight back – together.
