John - New backpacks, pencils, notebooks, crayons. It’s that time of year when kids and parents are scrambling to get ready for school. My daughters headed back to school last week. They started their first day of school with excitement and hope for a great year. Sadly, for 75 million children around the world, the first day of school may never come. For these children living in war zones or as refugees, school is just a dream. You and I can change this. Soon, world leaders will gather in New York to discuss ways to address these kinds of problems. This is our chance to persuade the U.S. to support funding for Education Cannot Wait, a global fund that helps children living in war zones go to school. Help secure children’s futures by urging Congress and the president to fund Education Cannot Wait. Two years ago, horrible violence against the Rohingya minority in Myanmar erupted. Amidst this violence, Hasina fled her village with her family because of this rampant violence and the fear of rape. After a harrowing journey, she just wanted an opportunity to go to school and be a regular kid again. Thankfully, she is now back in school where her favorite subject is English. Being in school gives her a sense of normalcy, helping her to recover from the terrible things she experienced. Education can truly change children’s lives. As a mom, I can’t imagine my children experiencing the things that Hasina did. Without school, I know my girls would struggle to overcome trauma and lose their chance to have a hopeful future. Already, Education Cannot Wait has reached more than 1.4 million children. But there are so many more that need our help. Please join me in sending a message to Congress and the president today. Thank you for being a voice for kids, |
