Communities across the northern
Caribbean are reeling from the devastating impact of Hurricane Melissa.
The storm’s catastrophic effects include life-threatening flash floods,
landslides, and destructive winds, which have severely damaged
infrastructure, power, and communications. Flooding has also created a
hazardous environment, with floodwaters potentially carrying bacteria,
debris, and electrical hazards.
Mercy Corps stands ready to respond in Jamaica and Haiti, with the
potential to expand our efforts in the Bahamas if needed. [ [link removed] ]Please act in
this urgent moment of need to help sustain our lifesaving work in places
like the Caribbean and communities around the world.

Update:
Mercy Corps is preparing to mobilize in response to Hurricane Melissa, a
historic Category 5 storm that is currently devastating the Caribbean.
Communities across Jamaica, Haiti, and the Dominican Republic are bracing
for heavy rainfall, flooding, and landslides.
Â
"We are deeply concerned for vulnerable communities already impacted
by severe rainfall from Hurricane Melissa. We are prepared to support
immediate needs, prioritizing clean water and emergency cash for Â
families who may lose homes or livelihoods."
Â
HUGH APRILE, Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean
Â
Our priority will be to help families stay safe, restore access to
essentials like clean water, and ensure local organizations have the
resources they need to respond quickly. Mercy Corps has invested in local
preparedness because we know that when communities lead, both response and
recovery happen faster and more equitably.
In Haiti, we have been helping communities prepare for storms like
Hurricane Melissa for years. Currently, we are reaching more than 40,000
people through disaster preparedness training and mobile early warning
systems.
Across the Caribbean, Mercy Corps has been a leading emergency responder
to major hurricanes — and a long-term partner helping local communities
build resilience to these disasters. Our Resilience Hubs across the region
are equipped with clean water, food, emergency communications technology,
solar panels and off-grid power to charge devices and keep medications
refrigerated — as well as critical emergency supplies to enable
communities to cope and recover. And our partners on the ground are ready
to spring into action.
