Friend — Islamophobia is on the rise in America, and it’s being driven by the far-right and the establishment alike.
Just look at how Zohran Mamdani is being treated in the final days of the race for New York City Mayor.
Andrew Cuomo’s remarks are a painful reminder of how Muslim Americans were scapegoated after the September 11th attacks. Every Muslim who was alive for the aftermath of 9/11 remembers how bad the hatred became, multiplying a time of pain and sorrow for all Americans.
Muslims were harassed and physically attacked in public. Muslim communities were discriminated against, profiled, and spied on in workplaces, mosques, airports, and their own homes. Even Sikhs, a completely different religion, became targets for attacks because of the way they looked. We can’t go back to that dark time.
And this goes well beyond just the race in New York — Ilhan sent a note just this week about fresh attacks by MAGA members of Congress. They are pushing to denaturalize and deport Ilhan and Zohran in a naked attempt to silence their critics and use their power to carry out illegal deportations.
GOP Rep. Randy Fine has been leading the charge with his disgusting rhetoric, calling Ilhan and Zohran “invaders”, “barbarians”, and “Muslim terrorists”, adding that Islamophobia is “fake.” The Chair of House Republican Leadership, Rep. Elise Stefanik, joined in by calling Zohran a “jihadist.”
Add in the fact that Elon Musk is boosting outright Nazi and white supremacist accounts to the top of the algorithm for millions on Twitter, and it’s easy to see how the hatred is spiraling out of control.
Friend — We have a responsibility to push back on all forms of racism and discrimination wherever we see it. We have a responsibility to stand up for our Muslim neighbors, not let them become scapegoats for Trump and MAGA.
The truth is that despite these rising attacks and the ever-worsening rhetoric from the far-right, we are on the cusp of a better way forward. Folks like Ilhan, Rashida Tlaib, Zohran Mamdani, Omar Fateh, and more are blazing a new trail where Muslims not only live fearlessly in America but step up to lead their communities and build a progressive movement that celebrates our shared humanity and focuses on building each other up, not tearing each other down.
We will meet the GOP’s hatred with compassion. We will fight for all Americans, no matter their religion, to have healthcare, housing, safety, and the affordable life they deserve. We will tackle the real problems in the country — and the billionaire class behind them — rather than dividing each other up.
