This past week, the Trump administration's all-out assault on immigration found a new target: student visas.

ICE, CBP, and the Department of State issued new rules regarding international students studying in the United States, noting that students attending colleges and universities with online-only models must leave the country or transfer to an institution with in-person classes — with only six weeks before many of schools begin their fall term.

This is an intentionally, unconscionably cruel decision — and it further confirms the fact that the Trump administration will do everything in their power to fulfill their xenophobic, bigoted agenda ahead of the 2020 election.

We must take action now, John. Will you join us and Representatives Pramila Jayapal, Ilhan Omar, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Ro Khanna to add your name to this LeftNet petition to demand that the White House put a stop to these rules?

From a logistical standpoint, differing time zones create massive problems for online instruction. But further from that, many colleges and universities have closed the window for transfer deadlines — and many students have already begun to secure housing and other obligations in preparation for the academic year ahead.

And, most importantly, since the United States is currently the global leader in COVID-19 cases — returning home will undoubtedly cause issues for many students and contribute to a heightened pandemic spread globally.

These new rules are heartless, careless, and discriminatory — and we must do everything we can to put a stop to them before it's too late. Will you take a moment to join us and add your name?
