Hi John,
In 2020, Iowa’s House District 2 seat was won by just six votes. In 2022, Connecticut’s House District 81 was decided by just one vote.
If you have friends or family on the fence about whether their vote really matters in their local election, share this with them: -
State and local leaders decide policies that impact your everyday life, like housing, public transit, schools, and policing.
- Local wins go national — major policy changes like same sex marriage, minimum wage increases and family leave started in cities before expanding.
-
Today’s local candidates become tomorrow’s state and national leaders — build momentum for the direction you want to go now.
Overall, less than 20% of people vote in most local elections. Voters 65 and older are also seven times more likely to cast a ballot in local elections than voters between the ages of 18 and 34. That means a small, unrepresentative group of residents are making outsized decisions that impact your community. The good news is, that also means you have direct power to organize, mobilize, and change outcomes in ways that shape your community’s future. Local elections are an opportunity to see that big changes often start small.
