Friend,

On July 1, I ordered the immediate removal of all of Richmond's Confederate statues. Despite barriers to progress, I'm proud to share that we've removed all city-owned Confederate monuments on Monument Avenue and nearly every Confederate statue in the city!

Removing these statues proves that progress and change are possible. We are no longer the capital of the Confederacy, and now we must work to instead become the capital of compassion. I'm proud to work for the people of a city that is full of diversity and love for all, and I look forward to continuing to work with you to make Richmond a more equitable and just city.

There was a near universal cry for the removal of these statues, but of course, removing monuments does not remove the racism and bigotry deeply entrenched in our country. That is why I am working hard to enact policy changes to continue to make Richmond a city that works for everyone. The Trump administration, GOP lawmakers, and extremists are already volleying attacks at me. But I see these attacks as proof that I'm doing my job.

This was only the first step of many, friend, and we have a lot more work ahead of us. As Mayor, I have the privilege to hear from the community and to listen to the people of Richmond. I will continue to listen, and I look forward to working alongside you in our fight for change.

Thank you,

Levar
