How White Supremacy Returned to Mainstream Politics

Earlier this week, President Donald Trump took to Twitter <[link removed]> to lift up the concept of Manifest Destiny. This was not the first time he did so; he invoked <[link removed]> the same phrase in his 2020 State of the Union address. And this was just the latest in a long line of rhetorical uses of words and ideas that have drawn attention to a disturbing trend in American politics.

While there are profound and positive changes unfolding in attitudes toward race in America-as evidenced by the strong public reaction to George Floyd's murder-another, more dangerous side to this debate seeks to bring back toxic political notions of racial superiority, stoke fear of immigrants and minorities to inflame grievances for political ends, and build a notion of an embattled white majority that has to defend its power by any means necessary.

These notions, once the preserve of fringe white nationalist groups, have increasingly infiltrated the mainstream of American political and cultural discussion, with poisonous results. A new report <[link removed]> from the Center for American Progress explores how white supremacist ideas have seeped into America's mainstream political discourse and discusses ways to combat the spread of white nationalism in U.S. politics. This report is meant to help readers recognize and call out attempts to smuggle white supremacy into everyday politics and to support civic leaders of all political persuasions who stand up to this poison.
