Dear John,
As we mark the International Day of Political Prisoners, we remember the estimated one million people around the world who are unjustly imprisoned for their political beliefs and peaceful activism.
At Freedom House, our team offers a range of support for political prisoners and their families. In addition to advocating for their release, we provide immediate and sustained assistance to those who are set free, allowing them to rebuild their lives with safety and dignity.
One political prisoner we assisted was freed from detention, but was then forced to relocate to a new country where they did not speak the language and had no family or support system. Freedom House staff stepped in to arrange safe housing, medical care, and psychological counseling to address the trauma of imprisonment. With additional mentorship and professional development stipends, the former prisoner was able to gain legal status in their new home country, join the workforce, and reengage with their old community while forging new connections in service of their continued fight for freedom and democracy back home.

, we rely on individual contributions to meet the growing demand for protection and reintegration of political prisoners worldwide. On average, it costs between $3,000 and $5,000 to help one person and their family with safe and temporary housing, medical treatment for injuries and torture, psychological care, legal and documentation support, and basic necessities during resettlement.
It is often said that a political prisoner's worst fear is to be forgotten. Freedom House works every day to keep these brave individuals' stories alive and will continue to stand with all those imprisoned for supporting democracy and freedom around the world. Every dollar counts, and as little as $25 can make an impact.
