The ceasefire in Gaza offers moments of much-needed relief and a glimmer of hope for Palestinian women and girls who have suffered through two years of horrific conflict. But there is a long road ahead.
Beyond emergency relief, it is vital to restore Gaza’s shattered healthcare system and support the brave midwives who are serving thousands of malnourished and wounded pregnant women, mothers, and newborns.
“We have seen a significant increase in the number of deliveries. We are delivering babies non-stop. One day, we had 78 newborns ,” said a midwife in Rafah.

Midwife Jenin , from Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip, supports pregnant women from a tent she set up in the Mawasi area.
“The number of births has increased. The workload has increased. There’s not enough time in the day. We can’t sit down for even a minute. One case after another. It’s miserable.”
It's time to address the global midwifery gap.
Recent funding cuts mean that generosity from people like you can provide essential relief to women and girls in Gaza. But truthfully, despite our best efforts, the crisis continues to deteriorate and we don’t have enough resources to keep up.

A woman sits with her three children beside their family tent in a displacement camp in western Gaza City; her baby is just two months old.
Medical staff and entire families have been killed and whole communities destroyed. Famine kills more people every day and the healthcare system lies in ruins. An estimated 55,000 pregnant and breastfeeding women are suffering from acute malnutrition in Gaza, and without skilled midwives, their lives and the lives of their babies hang in the balance.
The need for aid is greater than ever. UNFPA is one of the organizations delivering lifesaving care there — and one of the few who remain focused on pregnant mothers, women, and girls.
Can you please provide urgent relief to women and girls suffering in Gaza? Anything you can spare can supply midwives and health staff with vital nutritional supplements for pregnant women, provide Mama Kits for safe births, and Dignity Kits for hygienic and dignified periods. [[link removed]?]

We welcome the ceasefire agreement, the release of all hostages by Hamas, and the delivery of lifesaving humanitarian aid in Gaza. We are hopeful that peace will prevail and that the suffering of women, girls, and families will end. Thank you for being there.
