For more than a decade, InSight Crime has documented how synthetic drug trafficking has transformed organized crime in Latin America. From the rise of methamphetamines in the 2000s to the explosion of the illicit market for fentanyl and synthetic cocktails such as tusi, the trafficking and commercialization of these drugs have fallen under the control of highly decentralized and complex networks.
On November 20, researchers Victoria Dittmar and Sara García will share new findings on the routes, markets, and criminal dynamics that sustain this trade. They will also analyze why these markets are so resilient to interdiction efforts by authorities and what the future scenarios for drug trafficking in the region might look like.
