Friend — We’re about to be 30 days into this government shutdown, and it’s important to remember why we’re here.

Trump and Republicans are set to cut funding that helps bring down the cost of health care plans under the Affordable Care Act. Democrats stepped up to defend Americans from skyrocketing premiums and millions losing their coverage. Republicans have spent 30 days refusing to negotiate or even consider finding a solution to this health care crisis that they created.

Let’s put those cuts in perspective. 24 million Americans are currently getting their health insurance through the ACA, and all are in danger of seeing hikes to their premiums come 2026.

One of those Americans is Jessica from Florida. The Wall Street Journal reports that her health insurance premiums will jump from around $200 a month to $1,100 a month if the Republicans’ planned cuts go through.

Those costs are so high that Jessica may just become one of the 4 million Americans that experts estimate will be forced off their ACA plans. That would be devastating, given that Jessica regularly sees a specialist for an eye condition and may in the future require surgery to avoid blindness.

This is how Republican cruelty forces Americans to choose between their own health and making rent.

And let’s not forget that Republicans already got away with a massive health care cut this year when they passed their Big Beautiful Bill. They stole almost a trillion dollars from Medicaid funds so they could pay for massive tax cuts for billionaires. Now over 11 million more Americans will lose their health care over the coming years, and costs will rise for millions more.

Friend, Ilhan Omar understands that there is only one antidote to Trump and the GOP’s disastrous agenda on health care: Medicare-for-All.

It is outrageous that America is the wealthiest nation in the history of the world, but is the only developed nation that does not provide health care as a human right.
