Submit a public comment against Trump's destruction of asylum

** The Trump administration is trying to end asylum as we know it and we need you to DO something this week!

Several weeks ago, under the cover of pandemic and civil unrest, the Trump administration proposed a new rule that will eviscerate the rights of people to seek asylum in the United States. It will be a death blow to the entire system and functionally close the door to refugees worldwide fleeing persecution and violence. It will be the wall that Trump never got to build. The best "explainer" we have been able to find is from Vox: Trump is quietly gutting the asylum system in the pandemic ([link removed]) . It is bad news.

But! There is something each one of us can do to fight back. This is a proposed rule. Basically the way administrative law works is that the government has to publish notice of the rule and the public gets a certain period of time to make comments on it and express their opinions, concerns, and opposition. In this case these comments are due at 11:59 pm on July 15. Once these comments are submitted, the government actually has to review them. This means that if there are 25 comments, the rule could be published soon. If there are 25,000,000 comments, it will take a significant amount of time to process them and there is a possibility that the rule will not be promulgated before there is a transfer of power in the White House (another big if, we know).

One important thing is that comments have to be individual and personalized You can't just cut and paste something because the government knows when they get 1,000,000 identical comments. So commenting can be time consuming (remember: we are talking about saving the ENTIRE asylum system here, and besides, many of us are staying home right now, right?!?!). Fortunately several of our nationwide partners have created extremely convenient "click and comment" kits for your convenience-- choose one and go for it! We will share them with you here with the desperate plea to PLEASE comment. Refugees come to our country seeking asylum because they are afraid they will die. Trump wants our country to turn our collective backs on them. We have to stand in his way! Share this info with your networks. We need to get time on our side! REMEMBER these comments are due at 11:59 pm on July 15.
