Friend,
Last year, Nancy Pelosi called the Green New Deal the “green dream or whatever.”
Now, a body she created—the Select Committee on the Climate Crisis—is leading the charge for a massive green stimulus. Last week, the committee released the most detailed climate proposal in U.S. history, an ambitious plan that would invest in clean energy jobs, build American infrastructure, and advance climate justice.
While ambitious climate policy seemed impossible just a few years ago, it’s now at the center of the Democratic platform.
None of this would be possible without Data for Progress and our allies laying the groundwork to build coalitions, advocate for change, and show that the Green New Deal is popular. Our polling and policy memos are directly shaping climate legislation in Congress—and it’s turning the Green New Deal from a “green dream” to something with a real shot at becoming law.
The climate movement has never been this strong. We have the opportunity to pass a massive climate investment — but only if we act immediately. Help Data for Progress build the infrastructure to make it happen by donating $5 right now!
In a recent piece on our blog, our Green New Deal director Julian Brave NoiseCat explained how far the climate movement has come in just a few years. In 2017, The Atlantic published an article with an ominous headline: “Democrats Are Shockingly Unprepared to Fight Climate Change.” They weren’t wrong—that year, Senator Jeff Merkley’s plan to eliminate all emissions by 2050 failed to unite environmental advocates, and it never even received a vote in the Senate.
It seemed hopeless. But over the past few years, with the rise of new leaders like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the collaboration of dozens of progressive organizations, we now have a climate platform that unites the left and is ambitious enough to tackle the greatest challenge of the 21st Century.
As NoiseCat writes on our blog:[1]
Speaker Pelosi just endorsed a position to the left of a Trump-era Bernie Sanders’ climate bill. I’m not sure what they call it on Twitter, but by most normal definitions of the word, that’s progress.
This progress is a direct result of stronger organization and collaboration within the climate movement. Data for Progress’ partnerships with climate organizations are directly shaping climate policy in Congress, and our polling is demonstrating to legislators that their constituents support big investments in clean energy.
The climate committee’s new plan shows that our work is succeeding! We’re closer than ever to making the Green New Deal a reality. Chip in $5 to Data for Progress now!
