On June 15, the Trump administration proposed changes to the asylum system that would make it nearly impossible for people fleeing violence and persecution to obtain protection in the United States. If this rule is implemented, it would effectively end the current US asylum system as we know it and force tens of thousands of people back to danger.
Doctors Without Borders is calling on the administration to withdraw this dangerous rule—and we need you to join us. We’re urging every person reading this email to submit a public comment to the Trump administration opposing the rule. We’ve put together step-by-step instructions for you—and your comment could help save lives.
Asylum is not a legal loophole or a way to game the immigration system. It exists because, for some people, home is a death sentence. This proposed rule upends existing US and international refugee laws on the right to seek asylum and would force tens of thousands of people back to face danger and violence.
This proposed rule goes above and beyond the administration’s previous attempts to disqualify survivors of domestic violence and gang violence from protection. It aims to end asylum claims based on gender or gang recruitment, and it would redefine the meaning of persecution and torture. It would eliminate protections for people fleeing violence from non-state actors, directly threatening the lives of many of our patients, as well as hundreds of thousands of other people seeking safety.
Since 2012, Doctors Without Borders has provided medical and mental health care to thousands of migrants and asylum seekers on the migration routes through Mexico to the United States. Patients we have cared for along the route tell us they fled their home countries out of fear for their lives. They deserve to be heard and given a chance to finally find safety.
P.S. We need as many people as possible to leave public comments. Please forward this email to your friends and family and help us protect vulnerable asylum seekers.
