Jack,
While serving as Bernalillo County Clerk, my hands were tied when same-sex couples would request marriage licenses, so I invited Rose Griego and Kim Kiel (now close and dear friends of mine) as well as multiple other same-sex couples to sue me in hopes of a radical policy change.
As a result of Griego v. Oliver, the New Mexico Supreme Court ruled that any laws contradicting New Mexico's gender-neutral language on marriage and the state's Human Rights Act were unconstitutional.
Now, same-sex marriage is legal in New Mexico and other states across the country — but the fight for equality is far from over. We must continue to stand with the LGBTQ+ community to demand protections and civil rights. Nobody should be discriminated against because of whom they love or who they are.
I'm using my platform as a public official to fight for justice and lift up the voices of marginalized groups, and today I'm asking for your support of our LGBTQ+ friends and neighbors.
The Equality Act would prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity — in healthcare, housing, education, public spaces, and so much more. But the Senate refuses to pass it.
Will you sign the petition to stand with the LGBTQ+ community and help urge the Senate to pass The Equality Act? ADD YOUR NAME >>
