Email from Los Angeles Police Protective League Daily News & Updates Law Enforcement News A deputy killed. A 150-mph chase. Then, an off-duty cop took dramatic action on live television As the motorcyclist reached speeds of nearly 150 miles an hour, tailed by a phalanx of police cars on the 210 Freeway, he was putting distance between himself and the home where, according to authorities, he had just shot and killed a sheriff’s deputy. With viewers watching on live television Monday afternoon, he easily evaded a motorcycle officer who tried to stop him. He appeared to lift both hands off the handlebars as he pulled the slide back on a gun. His attempt at a quick escape ended when he plowed into a gray Toyota Camry, flipping over the front of his bike and launching him at least 10 feet in the air. It quickly emerged that the driver of the Camry was a San Bernardino County narcotics deputy who was off duty when the pursuit started, went back on duty and deliberately swerved into the motorcyclist, later identified as 47-year-old Angelo Jose Saldivar. Saldivar was captured by television cameras sitting up on the pavement before being airlifted to a hospital, where he was in stable condition Tuesday. He is expected to be charged in the coming days in the death of San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Deputy Andrew Nunez, 28, who had worked for the department for six years and leaves behind a 2-year-old daughter and a pregnant wife. Three policing experts told The Times that the deputy who ended the pursuit was probably justified in using deadly force because the motorcyclist was a suspect in a homicide and posed a threat to the public. MyNewsLA Fentanyl deaths decline in LA County as district attorney promises aggressive prosecution of "fentanyl poisoners" While deaths within Los Angeles County linked to fentanyl are declining, the synthetic opioid is still a leading cause of death among 18 to 40-year-olds, according to county officials. Los Angeles District Attorney Nathan Hochman and Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna led a Tuesday news conference to warn of the "silent assassin in the community," referring to fentanyl, ahead of the Halloween holiday. Hochman said that drug dealers in the past have used candy to transport and disguise fentanyl, which is "killing at least eight people in this county every single day. It kills more unhoused people than anything else out there," he said. In 2024, LA County recorded 2,438 drug overdose deaths, marking a 22% countywide decline from the 3,137 deaths in 2023. "The collaboration of law enforcement, health agencies, and communities working together is a testament to the decline in fentanyl deaths," Luna said. Many who have died from fentanyl poisoning may not have realized they were ingesting it. Hochman said the Mexican cartel laces fentanyl into all different types of drugs, including marijuana, cocaine, ecstasy, and heroin -- and it's laced into counterfeit pills, such as Adderall, Xanax, Percocet, and Oxycodone. MyNewsLA CHP Advises Public to Drive Safe, Sober on Halloween, or Consequences Could Be Scary Halloween revelers who risk driving under the influence or breaking other traffic laws could face very scary consequences, the California Highway Patrol warned Tuesday. The agency announced that a 12-hour maximum enforcement period, or MEP, is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. Friday, during which all available officers will deploy onto freeways, highways and unincorporated roads throughout Riverside County to nab DUI suspects and other lawbreakers. Personnel from the Beaumont, Blythe, Indio, Riverside and Temecula CHP stations are slated to take part in the enforcement campaign. “Impaired driving destroys lives, and even one life lost is one too many,” CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee said. “This Halloween, we’re asking everyone to do their part before the festivities begin, arrange a sober ride and help us keep California’s roads safe for everyone who uses them.” During the agency’s 2024 Halloween MEP, there were about 500 crashes in the CHP’s jurisdictions statewide, with nearly 100 of those caused by drunk or drugged motorists. Two people were killed and 60 others injured. A total of 120 drivers were arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated, according to figures. MyNewsLA Man who threatened to blow up PD station repeatedly runs over Pa. officer A 21-year-old man is facing attempted murder charges after allegedly using his SUV to ram a police officer multiple times outside a hotel in Montgomery County, NBC Philadelphia reported. The suspect was taken into custody on Oct. 24 after a violent confrontation that left a Plymouth Township police officer seriously injured. Authorities say the incident began earlier that morning when the suspect fled from two attempted traffic stops in Springfield and Whitpain townships. Police had been alerted that the suspect was driving a white Mercedes G-Wagon and had allegedly made threats to blow up a Chester County police station. Officers were advised not to pursue due to his dangerous driving. Around 12:39 p.m., a Plymouth Township officer located the suspect’s vehicle at the hotel and attempted a stop. Surveillance and witness video obtained by NBC10 shows the suspect reversing into the officer’s patrol vehicle multiple times before accelerating toward the officer, who had stepped out and drawn his weapon. According to a criminal complaint, the officer fired at least five shots, striking the suspect with a grazing head wound. Despite this, the suspect allegedly drove over the officer, who had been wounded in the leg. After briefly driving away, he returned and struck the officer three more times as the officer called for help and applied a tourniquet to his own leg. Council members voted unanimously to approve a motion introduced by Councilman Curren Price in September alongside colleagues Hugo Soto-Martinez, Eunisses Hernandez, Bob Blumenfield, Heather Hutt and Ysabel Jurado. The council wants to raise the minimum wage for construction workers from $18 an hour to nearly $32.50 an hour, and add an additional health care credit of $7.65 per hour.
