Final Victory: Castle Hills Vote Confirms Sylvia Gonzalez’s Win Against Retaliation

Thanks to IJ's win at the U.S. Supreme Court last year, Sylvia Gonzalez and Castle Hills, Texas, reached an agreement that will see statewide training on First Amendment retaliation—covering Sylvia’s case—offered to more than 1,100 municipalities across Texas. Castle Hills officials will be required to complete this training. The town will also compensate Sylvia for arresting her on a trumped up charge following her criticism of town officials.

“It’s been more than five years, and today I can finally breathe,” said Sylvia Gonzalez. “I never wanted to end up in a Supreme Court fight, but I kept going because what happened to me shouldn’t happen to anyone."

Victory! Court Rules that Minnesota Horse Teacher Is Able to Continue Teaching in Important First Amendment Win

You may not have heard of horse massage—a practice that helps horses recover from injury and perform at their best—but it's the subject of IJ's latest free speech. Leda Mox teaches equine massage, but a Minnesota law threatened to stable her trainings unless she spent thousands and jumped over burdensome hurdles. A district court said neigh to this restriction on her speech. This victory flows from an earlier IJ win in equine education: a ground-breaking 9th Circuit ruling that banning the teach of horseshoeing to students who hadn't graduated high school likely violated the First Amendment.
