In 2000, I became a US citizen at the age of 17. It was the start of a new life in Minneapolis, and I quickly got involved in organizing in my neighborhood.
In 2016, I ran for office for the first time, winning a seat in the Minnesota State House and gaining the incredible opportunity to serve the people of Minneapolis.
In 2018, we shocked the entire political establishment when we won our race for Minnesota’s 5th congressional district, and I, along with Rashida Tlaib, became the first Muslim women ever elected to serve in Congress, as well as the first woman of color to be elected to Congress in Minnesota.
In 2020, I faced my first primary challenger as an incumbent and, despite a tough battle, we won big, earning two more years representing Minneapolis. We went on to do the same in 2022 and 2024, too, despite millions of dollars being spent to take me down and stop our progressive movement.
Friend, the common thread of all of these big victories has been you. We’ve always stuck to a grassroots-first playbook when running this campaign.
But it means when we have a fundraising deadline — like we do on Friday — I need to turn to regular folks like you to chip in and help us make the budget.
