Dear John,
We hoped to bring you some good news after ADL and our coalition partners in

#StopHateforProfit had a lengthy discussion Tuesday with Facebook’s senior leadership, including CEO Mark Zuckerberg, COO Sheryl Sandberg and Chief Product Officer Christopher Cox...
It became abundantly clear, however, that Facebook’s leadership is not yet ready to address the vitriolic hate on their platform. Zuckerberg offered the same old defense of white supremacist, antisemitic, racist, Islamophobic and other hateful groups on Facebook that you have heard too many times before. #StopHateforProfit coalition partner Derrick Johnson of the NAACP put it well when, after the meeting, he said, “They have a huge blind spot when it comes to hate groups and the sentiments of Americans across the country.”

When we launched #StopHateforProfit, we published

10 common-sense steps that Facebook could take immediately that would result in real action against hate and disinformation.
Instead of responding to the call for change from over 1,000 businesses that have announced their participation in the #StopHateForProfit ad pause, Facebook wants us to accept the same refrain as before.
One of our ten recommendations was addressed, and we’re glad to see progress. This week Facebook announced they would be hiring a Civil Rights VP position. This is an important step and long overdue. Still, knowing how this role will influence policies, product and transparency and in what way the position will be the start of creating a lasting civil rights infrastructure is uncertain. There was no attempt to respond to the other nine recommendations. All of which are reasonable and easy to implement.
Zuckerberg did not commit to automatic recourse for advertisers whose content runs alongside hateful posts. He did not provide sufficient answers for why Facebook recommends hateful groups to users. He did not agree that Facebook should provide an option for victims of hate and harassment to connect with a live Facebook representative. He did not acknowledge the need for better content moderation policies to ensure that their terms of service are applied fairly and do not bend to political expediency. Finally, there were no tangible plans for Facebook to address the rampant disinformation and violent conspiracies on its platform. Our coalition was left disappointed by Facebook’s
unwillingness to come to the table with real solutions to the very real problems they need to address.
A day later, Facebook finally released the results of the independent Civil Rights audit we asked them to undertake years ago. In reviewing the audit, it is clear that Facebook’s approach to civil rights remains reactive and piecemeal. Unless a civil rights infrastructure is embedded permanently and prioritized in every facet of their business, hate, antisemitism, racism and bigotry will persist on the platform.
Implementing real change — both in response to the #StopHateforProfit movement and the results of their own audit — shouldn’t be hard for one of the world’s wealthiest and most innovative companies. If they have the will to pay attention to the values of justice as much as they do the value of their stock price, Facebook’s leadership could quickly make Facebook much better for users, advertisers and society.
So How Do We Keep The Pressure On Facebook?
If the companies you support do not yet support #StopHateforProfit, please urge them to join us now.

now is the perfect time for Facebook to hear your message that enough is enough. Tell them to stop providing a home for antisemitism, racism and extremism. After you sign, please encourage your contacts on Facebook and other social platforms to do so as well.
Thank you for being a part of #StopHateforProfit, and demanding change for good.
Sincerely,
Jonathan Greenblatt
CEO and National Director
