As the last state in the South without post-Roe v. Wade restrictions on abortion access, Virginia has seen a massive jump in abortions performed by clinicians in 2024.
According to AXIOS Richmond, Virginia experienced the biggest increase of any state in the country, with the percentage of out-of-state abortion patients rising from 15% to 25%...and continuing between 2023 and 2024.
And that’s not all: Women in surrounding states aren’t just traveling to VA to get abortions.
They are also traveling across state lines to receive basic prenatal care. We are witnessing patients being turned away by physicians in abortion-ban states due to religious, moral, or ethical beliefs (looking at you, TN).
This is why we must do everything we can in these final days to ensure that VA remains a safe haven for reproductive rights in the South.
As red states continuously work to strip away everything from abortion to contraception access, more and more people are going to be forced to travel to states like VA for basic, sometimes lifesaving care. But abortion is not yet enshrined in the state constitution, and we are working to change that. →
