We need bold, decisive action

John,

Coronavirus is wrecking economies and pushing millions of people into extreme poverty. Right now, many countries are being faced with the choice of funding their emergency response plans and saving lives, or making debt repayments.

In less than two weeks there is an opportunity to help fix this. Finance Ministers from G20 countries and representatives from financial institutions will meet to discuss the financial impact of coronavirus. In this meeting we need them to agree to suspend all debt repayments. This would give all countries the chance to focus on fighting the coronavirus pandemic.

Will you add your voice and join our call for G20 Finance Ministers, World Bank and IMF to suspend all debt repayments in 2020 and 2021?

G20 leaders have begun to act. In April, they agreed to suspend part of the debt owed - for the reminder of 2020. But the financing needs facing many countries is still huge. The World Bank recently estimated that the pandemic could push as many as 100 million people into extreme poverty.

Suspending debt repayments will be one of the fastest ways to free up funds to help countries survive the economic impact of the pandemic. We only have a few days left before the G20, World Bank and IMF meet to discuss debt suspension measures. Add your voice to our petition asking them to suspend debt repayments for the most vulnerable countries for 2020 and 2021.
