** Gwynne congratulates Vale View campaigning parents on reversal of early Friday closure
------------------------------------------------------------

Andrew Gwynne, MP for Denton and Reddish, has expressed his delight at the news that Vale View Primary School in Reddish will end early Friday closures from September, and congratulated parents and campaigners for their role in securing this outcome.

Under the Conservative Government, funding for schools has been cut considerably; whilst the situation has improved slightly, schools in Stockport still face a budget shortfall of £8 million this year.

School cuts have caused schools around the country to consider different ways to save costs, including finishing early on Friday. This was the choice that Vale View Primary in Reddish took.

Parents at the school, led by Megan Montgomery and Amanda Baxter, started a campaign to reverse this decision and call for adequate funding for schools in England. They gathered over 113,000 signatures for a petition presented to Parliament by Gwynne last year.

Vale View has announced that, from September, the school will no longer close early on Fridays.

Andrew Gwynne said:

“I was absolutely delighted to hear that Vale View will no longer be closing early on Fridays. The fact that Government cuts had driven schools to take actions like this was shameful and I am glad that the school is now able to take this decision.

“This is partly testament to the fantastic campaigning of Megan Montgomery, Amanda Baxter and the parents and supporters of Vale View. I was proud to deliver their massive petition in Parliament last year and am so pleased to now be able to congratulate them on the success of their campaign.

“Unfortunately, this does not mean that the issue of school underfunding has gone away, and I will continue to press the Government to give schools the funding that they need to provide the level of education that our children deserve.”

** Gwynne urges Culture Secretary to ensure funding reaches regions
------------------------------------------------------------

Andrew Gwynne, MP for Denton and Reddish, has written to Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden to urge him to provide more information about the culture support package and ensure that funding reaches the regions.

On Monday, the Government announced a £1.57 billion support package to protect theatres, arts, cultural and heritage institutions through the Coronavirus crisis.

£1.15 billion of this package is allocated to support cultural organisations in England. This is made up of £880m in grants and £270m of repayable loans.

As well as providing entertainment and education to the general public, the arts and culture sector makes a significant contribution to the economy and to the UK’s influence around the world.

In his letter to the Culture Secretary, Gwynne asks for urgent clarification on exactly how the scheme will operate to ensure that organisations and individuals within the sector can plan ahead. He also asks for a commitment to ensuring that the money reaches England’s regions.

Andrew Gwynne said:

“I welcome the announcement of this support package for the arts and culture sector. It’s a really important sector that gives us so much joy and entertainment, but also contributes hugely to the economy.

“However, we don’t yet have enough detail about the support package and this is vital for those working in the sector. I hope the Culture Secretary will provide this information urgently.

“I have also urged him to make sure that this funding doesn’t all go to London and the South East, but that it is fairly distributed to the businesses and organisations that need it most, wherever they are.”

** Gwynne backs Co-op campaign to end violence towards shop workers
------------------------------------------------------------

Andrew Gwynne, MP for Denton and Reddish, is supporting a campaign by the Co-op to end violence against retail workers.

The British Retail Consortium reported that at least 424 violent or abusive incidents were reported every day in the year to April 2019, up by almost a tenth on the previous 12 months.

The Coronavirus crisis saw the number of incidents of abuse and violence increase considerably, to around 3,500 per day.

Some examples of incidents have included multiple threats by customers to cough on colleagues and ‘give them Coronavirus’ and further threats of assaults because people have had to queue to enter stores, socially distance or simply because they do not have a specific product.

Andrew Gwynne said:

“Our fantastic retail workers have been on the frontline during this crisis and have rightly been recognised as key workers.

“It is therefore very distressing to see the spike in assaults and intimidation of retail workers.

“Such attacks and abuse are absolutely disgraceful and I fully support the Co-op’s calls for new legislation to provide better protection to key workers in shops and stores around the country.”

This afternoon, I had a great zoom meeting with Historic England and Tameside Council about the Dukinfield Old Hall Chapel... once the private chapel of the ‘Puritan’ Duckenfield family, now an at-risk ruin, it’s a historic early non-conformist and Unitarian site. The Friends Group want to preserve.

📺 WATCH: We’ve had a statement on the historic health scandals surrounding vaginal mesh, primodos and sodium valporate.

The Cumberlege Report highlights specifically that patient safety wasn’t prioritised. The Minister says she doesn’t know what that means. I’m glad there’s a focus on it now, but we have to learn the mistakes of the past which have damaged so many lives.

📺 WATCH: As the economy reopens, in a COVID-19 safe way, I ask the Leader of the House of Commons when the ‘imminent’ statement on reopening our leisure centres, gyms, pools, sports facilities and health and beauty businesses.

If they’re aiming for mid-July, they’d better get a move on. “Imminent is imminent” says the Leader!

📻 LISTEN: This week, I spoke to Nicky Campbell on BBC 5 Live's Breakfast Show about my experiences of Long Covid and the need for more research into and understanding of the condition. We also spoke a bit about the work that the Home Affairs Select Committee is doing.

Apologies for the long pauses, and a few muddled sentences. The ‘brain fog’ has been quite bad today sadly.
The Sun picked up on my comments about child sex abuse survivors' compensation claims being cut after committing crimes themselves. These people are victims of very serious and disgusting sexual crimes perpetrated against them in childhood and no matter what else has happened in their lives they should get the full compensation to which they’re entitled for these horrific crimes against them.
