Friend,
My name is Kimberly Monaghan, and I serve as chair of the Common Dreams Board of Directors.
I'm writing to you today to explain why this is such a perilous time for Common Dreams and to make a special personal appeal for your support.
Common Dreams was founded 27 years ago as a new, people-powered media outlet. To fund it, we turned not to advertisers or deep-pocketed elites, but to everyday people who felt, as we do, that another model of journalism was urgently needed and possible.
We don't just describe the perils of the world — the greed of corporations, the destruction of species and nature, and the corruption of our politics. We also report on those working every day to make our society more just, our economies more fair, and this planet a lovelier and more peaceful place.
Today, however, we're facing a president who has ordered the FBI to investigate progressive political speech as "domestic terrorism." He's ordered his IRS to probe, and possibly suspend, the tax-exempt status of nonprofit organizations that oppose or interfere with his destructive agenda.
We've always had plenty of enemies among the wealthy and powerful — and we're proud of that. But we're now operating in an exponentially more dangerous political environment, and every article we publish or voice of dissent we lift up puts us at potential risk.
So if you value independent journalism that refuses to capitulate to the administration's increasingly authoritarian threats, please donate to our Fall Campaign so Common Dreams can continue this vitally important work no matter what Trump or his far-right cronies throw at us.
With your backing, we will emerge from these difficult times better and stronger than ever. But we simply can't do it alone.
