John, we’ve just filed an emergency lawsuit against gerrymandering in North Carolina.
Politicians are rigging voting maps across the country – after President Donald Trump pressured them to ensure that voters like us, who are already paying the price for his failed presidency, don’t have any way to hold him accountable in next year’s midterms. [1]
And in North Carolina, politicians took that opportunity to silence Black voters by carving up the 1st Congressional district – which they’ve been trying to do for years.
So, during a cost-of-living crisis, they sprung into action – not to fix any problems, but to force through a voting map with one sole purpose: punishing voters they think will vote against them.
Don’t take our word for it – the decisive evidence in our lawsuit is this shocking, direct quote from the politician who drew this rigged map: [2]

“The motivation behind this redraw is simple and singular: draw a new map that will bring an additional Republican seat to the congressional delegation.

If Democrats take control of the House, they will torpedo President Trump’s agenda.

[The president] has called on Republican controlled states across the country to fight fire with fire. This map answers that call.”

John, you and I know politicians do this all the time behind the scenes – but it’s rare we catch them openly admitting to it!
That’s why we’re confident this is the right fight: it’s a case we can win, and possibly shut down mid-decade map rigging – by both parties – not just in North Carolina, but across the country.
I don’t need to tell you what a big deal that is – as the Supreme Court hears a case that could gut what’s left of the Voting Rights Act and enable drawing up to 19 more House seats to Trump’s specifications. [4]
This is a battle between democracy and dictatorship we can’t afford to lose. Here’s your chance to draw a line in the sand, John.
If you agree politicians have no business picking who their voters are, I want you to know that Common Cause’s strategic state-by-state litigation is the best tool we have to stop them.
