Dear friend,

Will you take one minute to email your senators and your representative to help save vulnerable federal prisoners from COVID-19? [link removed] [[link removed]]

The COVID-19 pandemic is a serious threat to people in prison, especially since it is impossible to effectively social distance in a prison. We know that “lock-downs” are not successfully eliminating spread, because more than 6,500 federal prisoners have contracted the virus, along with hundreds of staff. That’s why FAMM believes we need to increase the number of vulnerable people who are sent home from federal prisons as quickly as possible.

Thankfully, there is a bill in Congress — the COVID-19 Safer Detention Act (S. 4034) — that would help us reach that goal. This bill would expand access to home detention for elderly prisoners and access to compassionate release for anyone who is at higher risk of serious harm from the virus. This bill will likely be considered for a vote in the U.S. Senate in the next couple months, or for inclusion in the next COVID-19 stimulus package.

Help us protect our loved ones and neighbors in prisons! Send an email to your senators and your representative. Urge them to support and cosponsor the COVID-19 Safer Detention Act (S. 4034), and to quickly transfer vulnerable prisoners home. [link removed] [[link removed]]
