I want to tell you about my friend Garlin Gilchrist.

Garlin and I were both born and raised in Detroit. We were both raised by a parent who worked in the auto industry, and we saw from an early age how good union jobs allow working people to provide a better life for their families.

When Garlin ran for Lieutenant Governor in 2018, I was running in my first race for Congress. Here we are knocking on doors together in 2018:

In 2020, early in the pandemic, I teamed up with Garlin to deliver critical COVID-19 updates to our communities through virtual town halls. Later that year, we partnered with one another to encourage Michiganders to take advantage of early and absentee voting. Here we are getting out the vote in 2020:

When auto workers at Ford, GM, and Stellantis went on strike, we stood with union workers in their fight for a fair contract. Here we are with UAW President Shawn Fain in September 2023, the month before UAW workers won a new union contract:

Today, Garlin is the highest-ranking Black elected official in Michigan history. And he’s never forgotten his roots. Like me, he stands up to corporate greed in our shared struggle for an economy that puts everyday people first. As our Lieutenant Governor, Garlin has worked to expand affordable housing and improve access to healthcare and mental health services.

Now, Garlin is running to be the next Governor of the State of Michigan. He’s the only Democrat in the race who is willing to call out the toxic influence of billionaire money, AIPAC money, and corporate money in our politics.

After earning two engineering degrees and working as a software engineer, Garlin came home to serve his community. He’s also connected tens of thousands of Michiganders to reliable, affordable, high speed internet.

Garlin knows what it’s like to be from a community that has been forgotten and left behind. I know he’ll fight for the people over corporate greed, and unlike billionaires Elon Musk and Donald Trump, he knows how to use technology and innovation to help all of our communities thrive.
