Add your name to the petition to demand the permanent closure of the Irwin County Detention Center!
Dear MoveOn member,
Immigration and Customs Enforcement is planning to resume detaining immigrants at the Irwin County Detention Center (ICDC) after the center was shut down for its horrifying history of medical malpractice and abuse.1
Widespread outrage and public pressure helped close the Irwin County Detention Center in 2021 after nearly 40 women came forward detailing their mistreatment at ICDC, including nonconsensual and medically unnecessary gynecological procedures.2 People came together to protest the inhumane conditions at ICDC years ago and helped shut it down. We must do it again right now.
Will you sign the petition to demand the permanent closure of the ICDC?
An investigation by the Senate found alarming reports of misconduct by Dr. Mahendra Amin—who was not a board-certified OB-GYN—at ICDC and a failure by ICE and the private group operating the detention center to appropriately oversee the medical providers hired or intervene when complaints were made.3
The Senate review committee found that Dr. Amin was "aggressive" and "inappropriate" and that his medical treatments were substandard. Many of the women subject to Dr. Amin’s harm report continued physical pain and uncertainty regarding their fertility.4
It is an insult to every survivor who came forward to detail the harm caused at the Irwin County Detention Center—as well as their loved ones and community—to reopen under this administration. Add your name to oppose reopening ICDC and detaining immigrants there after the egregious human rights violations that occurred at the facility.
Imagine experiencing severe abdominal pain. You are taken to a doctor in shackles. The doctor treats you roughly and begins invasive gynecological exams without consent and without explanation. After just a quick ultrasound, the doctor determines you need surgery to remove ovarian cysts, not offering any other less-invasive options. You decline, because you’ve heard and seen the horror stories of women who have received treatment at ICDC. The shots that the doctor gives you for your cysts instead cause severe pain and abnormal bleeding.
Your doctor continues to pressure you to do surgery, going so far as to refer you to a psychiatrist because you refuse.
You request, multiple times, alternative medical assistance. You request that your complaints about the treatment you’ve received to be recorded. You request copies of your medical records.
Instead, you are deported.
That is the experience of one woman who fought back against the substandard care at ICDC—whose cries for help and accountability went unanswered.5 Project South detailed more than a dozen other accounts from people who also experienced harm.6
We owe it to the women detained and abused at ICDC to fight for the detention center to be closed permanently, and to ensure the horrors of the past do not repeat there. Add your name to the petition now.
When reports detailing years of abhorrent violations first came to light, it sparked outrage, and the Department of Homeland Security terminated its contracts with LaSalle Corrections, the private group in charge of the Irwin County Detention Center in Georgia.7
But under the Trump administration’s cruel policies, they are reopening the detention center—a complete disregard for the history of abuse and mistreatment that occurred there.
This is not a partisan issue, it's a human rights issue. No person should be coerced or forced into unnecessary medical procedures—ever. The courage and bravery of the women who came forward must be remembered. And their efforts to expose and end this cruelty must prevail.
It is egregious that ICE is working once again with LaSalle Corrections at ICDC after their blatant negligence. Sign the petition and share with three friends to help sound the alarm.
Thanks for all you do.
